the nonsensical bleating of the Republican sheep has really gotten to me lately. i wouldn’t necessarily include the more prudent members of the right, but they are just as much to blame for McCain/Palin’s recently sensationalized screams of “SOCIALISM!” directed at Obama’s apparent rush to “redistribute the wealth.” while it’s a conveniently nifty little trick to link Obama back to those “shady” terrorist/Muslim/BLACK connections and strike fear into the insecure hearts and minds of
real white Americans, these allegations are both true and false but ultimately very misleading (consider the source.)
for anyone to really “get” the american political & economic systems, it should first be understood that every single aspect of the american government and general way of life is a unique, yet completely bastardized version of purer ideologies. any smart libertarian will tell you that American policies are not anywhere near to perfect capitalism. any socialist sympathizer such as myself would tell you that America is far, far away from any real socialism even if there are certain laws that resemble socialist thinking. neither ideology is represented in it’s true form, nor should it be.. Yet we have shrill politicians on the right claiming that the “redistributing” tax policies of an Obama administration would lead to PURE communism!
If “redistributing the wealth” by changing tax policies is considered socialism by McCain/Palin and their ilk, then logically we must consider every American president since the 1950’s as virtual reincarnations of Karl Marx. They have all changed the tax policies and therefore moved the wealth around. Best example? George W. Bush redistributed most of the wealth of our country right where it should not belong–the already wealthy class who in turn decided to run their companies into the ground and ask for government bailouts to give them MORE!
Furthermore, if Obama’s proposed policies are indeed “socialist”…then what exactly do we call the operations carried out by Sarah Palin as governor of Alaska? Taking the profits of oil companies and handing out checks to the people of Alaska–the people “collectively” own the resources. You betcha, doggonit.
“And Alaska—we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs. … It’s to maximize benefits for Alaskans, not an individual company, not some multinational somewhere, but for Alaskans” stated Palin.
Alaska is sometimes described as America’s socialist state, because of its collective ownership of resources—an arrangement that allows permanent residents to collect a dividend on the state’s oil royalties.
For once I can give Sarah Palin a thumbs up–she’s a true red commie…even if she doesn’t like it or (more likely) doesn’t know it.
